Mitsubishi Power to Supply Boiler Upgrade Equipment for Vietnam’s Ô Môn 1 Plant

November 2025Mitsubishi Power, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has been awarded a contract to supply essential equipment for the boiler upgrade at the Ô Môn 1 Thermal Power Plant located in Cần Thơ, Vietnam. The upgrade is part of a broader initiative to convert the facility from oil to natural gas. Key components include newly designed gas burners and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system aimed at reducing nitrogen oxide emissions, thereby aligning the plant with more rigorous environmental standards. Mitsubishi Power Asia Pacific, based in Singapore, will deliver engineering and technical support during the upgrade process. The Ô Môn 1 facility comprises two 330MW units that were originally equipped by Mitsubishi Power and entered service in 2009 and 2015, respectively. The fuel conversion project is being developed by Power Generation Corporation 2, with LILAMA Corporation and Power Generation Corporation 3 acting as engineering, procurement, and construction contractors. Many products involved in the power generation industry usually require CR certification in order to be approved for import and sale in Vietnam.
Mitsubishi Power’s continued involvement in Vietnam includes a separate contract awarded in August for two J-Series Air-Cooled gas turbines destined for the upcoming Ô Môn 4 Thermal Power Plant. This adjacent 1,155MW facility is scheduled to begin operations in 2028. The Vietnamese government’s Power Development Plan VIII supports such projects by promoting energy diversification, encouraging a transition away from coal, and increasing the share of natural gas and renewables in the national power mix.
