Vietnam Launches LNG Power Generation with High-Efficiency Equipment
8. January 2026Vietnam has commenced commercial operations of its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) power facility, marking a major milestone in the country’s energy transition. The Nhon Trach 3 and 4 Power Plant, developed by PV Power, has a combined capacity of 1.6 GW and is located in the Ong Keo Industrial Park in Dong Nai Province, approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Ho Chi Minh City. Built under an EPC contract by a consortium of Samsung C&T and Lilama, the project is the first in Vietnam to deploy H-Class gas turbines and operate on LNG. Machinery and equipment used in power plants usually require CR certification in order to be approved for import and sale in Vietnam.
As outlined in the revised Power Development Plan VIII (PDP8), LNG is set to play a critical role in Vietnam’s future power mix, with installed capacity expected to reach 22 GW by 2030. The new facility is expected to help meet rising electricity demand in the southern region and significantly reduce carbon emissions—by up to 60% compared to coal-fired plants of equivalent capacity—through the use of GE Vernova’s advanced 9HA.02 gas turbine technology. Each power block, exceeding 800 MW, includes high-efficiency turbines, steam systems, and a Once Through Heat Recovery Steam Generator (OT HRSG), along with an integrated distributed control system (Mark* VIe DCS) to enhance operational reliability. The plant also allows for future fuel flexibility, including the potential to transition from LNG to hydrogen, aligning with Vietnam’s long-term net-zero emission goals.
