Vietnam to start Construction of North-South High-Speed Railway on December 19, 2025
18. September 2025Vietnam will begin construction of its North-South high-speed railway on December 19. This follows the approval of the project’s investment policy by the 15th National Assembly during its 8th session on November 30, 2024. Prime Minister Pham confirmed the start date during a cabinet meeting in Hanoi on August 7. The planned railway will stretch 1,541 kilometers from Ngoc Hoi Station in Hanoi to Thu Thiem Station in Ho Chi Minh City, passing through 15 provinces and cities following administrative reorganization. The line will operate at a maximum speed of 350 km/h and will include 23 stations, five of which are designated for freight. According to the preliminary land-use plan, nearly 11,000 hectares of land will be required, and approximately 120,836 households will need to be relocated. Equipment and components used in the construction of high-speed rail systems typically require CR certification to be eligible for import and sale in Vietnam.

The total investment for the project is estimated at around USD 67.5 billion. Completion is scheduled for 2035. Once operational, the railway is expected to reduce travel time between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to approximately 5.5 hours.
