Vietnam’s Auto Market Gains Momentum as Imports and EV Sales Surge

13. November 2025

Following a slow start to the year, Vietnam’s automotive market showed a strong recovery in October 2025. Vehicle sales by members of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) climbed to 37,910 units, marking a 24% increase over September and a marginal 2% year-on-year decline. The rebound was driven by improved supply chains, greater credit availability, reduced interest rates, and intensified promotional activity ahead of the year-end period. Passenger cars accounted for 27,246 units sold, up 33% month-on-month, while sales of commercial vehicles rose 6.6% to 10,162 units. In contrast, special-purpose vehicles fell 15% to 502 units. Locally assembled vehicles saw a 19% increase to 17,129 units, whereas completely built-up (CBU) imports jumped 28% to 20,781 units, highlighting consumer interest in diverse, tech-rich options. Many automotive components usually require VR Certification in order to be approved for import and sale in Vietnam.

Between January and October 2025, VAMA members recorded 289,331 vehicle sales, a 9.5% rise from the previous year. While domestic assembly increased by 2%, imported units rose significantly by 18%, reflecting shifting consumer preferences. Despite the strong figures, VAMA’s data excludes several key players such as Audi, BYD, and Jaguar Land Rover, and notably omits leading manufacturers Hyundai and VinFast. VinFast alone delivered 20,380 electric vehicles in October and reached a record 124,264 units for the ten-month period, the highest volume ever for a Vietnamese automaker. These trends underscore the competitive momentum in the industry, driven by new model launches, rising demand for imports, and increased consumer appetite for electric and technologically advanced vehicles.
